How to Win Friends and Influence People

  • May. 19th, 2008 at 12:29 AM
...or at least win friends.

I moved to this area a few months ago from far, far, away and don't really have friends here yet. I'm finally realizing that my job/lifestyle aren't conducive to making friends here, so I wanted to both get some suggestions on awesome social functions and "introduce" myself in case anybody is in a similar situation. My work schedule is demanding enough that I can't commit to regular volunteer gigs, which has always helped me meet people in the past. How do smart, artsy (but not hipster), progressive, twenty-something women make friends around here?

I'll also add that I'm applying to be an adjunct English instructor and I'm a writer, so I'd love to meet people involved in academia and/or writing. I'm happily coupled and not looking for a date; I'd just like to try to form a social life here. If you have any suggestions or want to say hi, let me know of any awesome activities or send me a message.

Thanks! :)

public transportation/minor league parks

  • May. 18th, 2008 at 11:08 PM
I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to get to Hadlock Field in Portland, ME (Sea Dogs) via public transportation?

Also, after you get to Lowell, does anyone know what the busses are like to LeLacheur Park (Spinners)? I know Lowell has their own bus system, but I can't figure out which bus to take.

And finally, is there a way to get to McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket from the Providence stop?

Thanks for your help.

The history of the city of destroyed dreams

  • May. 18th, 2008 at 10:59 PM
Have any of you ever gone through the calendar of this community for kicks and giggles?
i was thinking about how the b0st0n button says "since 1997" and thought, hey, that can't be right, livejournal wasn't even operational until at least 1999, i think.
So i went to check the calendar and it was actually 2001.
Take a look at the calendar at old posts, maybe someone can find the first snark here? old city characters? etc?
There's a midnight showing (well, most likely, it's technically a 12:01 am showing) at the Somerville Theater. You can prepurchase tickets at their website.

I thought I'd put it up. Drop a comment here if you're going to go, for meeting-up purposes I'll be wearing my bowler hat.

Also, you would be well-advised to know that their liquor license requires they close up the bar at 10pm, so don't go in expecting any beer.
This Thursday at the Hard Rock Boston: 2 great new up and coming Brooklyn bands, Meowskers and Big Bang TV, will be making a rare New England performances. Lowell's Bearstronaut to open.

Where story ends

  • May. 18th, 2008 at 6:33 PM
To study the Buddha Way is to study the self. To study the self is to see the self fall away. When the self falls away, we are awakened by all things. To be awakened by all things is to see all bodies and minds, yours and others, fall away. The awareness of awakening itself falls away, for there is no one to be aware of it. Nothing is left, and this nothing continues ceaselessly.
- Dogen

A wonderful zazenkai at Haku-un-ji yesterday. Through 12 hours of zazen, kinhin, chanting, formal meals, samu, as my back ached and my legs seemed to scream at me, I could not have been happier. Towards the end, instead of giving a Dharma talk by himself, Sokai, the abbot, generously invited me to speak too. I did, and he and I traded commentaries which seemed to be received well.

When sitting with other people for so long, the mind's clutter shows itself for the superficial, meaningless noise that it is. You run through your standard complaints, sexual fantasies, whatever, over and over, until you're tired of them, until you're tired of your self (note the two separate words). There are people around you that you don't know, and you wonder who they are, wonder about their stories. And the wondering repeats itself, like the other babble in your mind, until you can no longer stand to pay any attention to it. Your story, all stories, fall away. There's nothing that was and nothing that will be, only one present moment after another - only what is.

So my father was looking at the damage on my car, and there's a decent chance it's totalled. (the damage is more than the car is worth) which is amusing given that it doesn't look terribly damaged until you look closely at the areas around the bumper..

too many lame b0st0n posts lately so...

I am talking to the post office tomorrow just to see if it is there.

Anyways, just get packages insured and with a signature required.

Boston Organics?

  • May. 18th, 2008 at 1:55 PM
I am interested in getting my fruits and veggies from a delivery service, and organic is a big plus for me. Before I go and spend half my grocery budget on it though, I am interested in learning if anyone here has experience with Boston Organics? I need the big box because that is what seems reasonable for a family of four who need to eat a lot of fresh produce, so it is really important to me that I get recommendations. Thanks!

So going to caitrin's house yesterday on 2A, a guy in a toyota 4runner slammed into the back of my car. Luckily we both had Toyotas, so it was a bumper to bumper hit, so there's not much damage to my car (though we noticed today that the impact squished the bumper in, and that injured the body some, and the bumper..) the stereo went flying out of the dash.. and I hit my head pretty hard on the headrest and possibly the steering wheel.. and my neck hurts and my back a little (though it's hard to tell if that's normal or not) and my head hurts where I hit it.. But mostly I'm fine. I refused the trip to the hospital because I don't think I'm badly hurt, though I probably ought to have gone as when the shock started wearing off things started hurting more.. I wish that the hospital system was such that it wouldn't have taken 5 hours. If I thought it'd be an hour, I'd totally have gone...

And I'd totally have noticed the damage to my car if the emergency people had let me get out and inspect my car.. But I was sort of insane with the shock, so I can understand a little why they wouldn't let me. And the police guy is sending me the paperwork cause he didn't have time to do it there..

Hopefully things will stop hurting tomorrow or so. the headache at least went away mostly last night.. provided I don't think about it..

XBox Marketplace does NOT play well

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 6:03 PM

I just got my XBox back from a repair.  We have three paid Gold Accounts in our house (myself, my wife, and my son), and just noticed that if my son bought a marketplace game, I can no longer play it.  If my wife bought the game, she can play it, but my son and I can not.

What gives?  When you buy a game, are you buying it for the console it was downloaded to or for the gamertag that bought it?  If the former, we should each be able to play the game (that is how it worked before the 'repair').  If the later, I should be able to go to any XBox, login with my account, and access the premium content I've purchased from anywhere else.

I think the former makes more sense.  You buy the game, you get one copy download to one machine, and anyone who uses that machine can play the game.  The current way the XBox is acting that isn't the case.  Maybe a post-repair glitch, or maybe Microsoft quietly changed the service?

hey everyone, i have two extra tickets for thee silver mount zion @ the middle east tonight. i can sell them both for $24 which is $4 less than if you buy them at the box office today. you could buy your first PBR with that $4!

i'd rather meet up before the show to make the sale tonight but i'm flexible. thanks!

Intuitive hairstylist?

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 2:50 PM
Here's the deal: I've had the same hairstyle for, oh, about 5 years now. I haven't changed it because it works with my face shape, and I can't find anyone willing to suggest how I should style my hair. Every time I see a stylist, they will only ask what I'm looking for and hesitate/refuse to recommend something different for me that I didn't come up with myself. =/

So, has anyone been to a stylist that is willing to tell them what to do with their hair? And it'd be nice if it didn't cost me an arm and a leg, but I'll pay if that's what it takes! (Also, I have a car, and I am not against driving all over creation for this...) Thanks!
